There is a legislative measure (Dec.214/1987) that allows protecting certain specimens of trees, which for relevancy, particularity, age, history or scientific peculiarity deserve protection or also for being a witness of historical facts of relief or being protagonists of legends and traditions. Their are the Monumental Trees.
The Oak Tree of Vilardel
It was the biggest and, most probably, the oldest documented oak tree in the country. The Oak Tree of Vilardel (situated within the municipality of Ribes de Freser) was a Quercus petraea. It was 18 m tall. The trunk, measured in March 2005, was 5.65 m wide . According to the forest engineers, it was the second biggest oak tree in Catalonia. The age of such huge specimen as The Oak Tree of Vilardel was uncertain, but according to several specialists it could be from 1,000 to 1,300 years old.
The Oak Tree of Vilardel, situated on a slope which is not far from the house of Vilardel in Ribes de Freser but very close to Fustanyà, had a huge crown of almost 24 m of height. It is visible from various spots within the valley of Freser and down from the forge of Queralbs.
One of the secondary branches, harmed by a severy gale in August 1996, was half a meter in diameter and had lines which dated from 385 years ago.
On January 24 2009 a severe gale suddenly wrecked the oak tree.
The monumental character of this oak tree granted it such a good reputation that it appeared in Ramon Vinyeta’s book Els arbres monumentals de Catalunya (The Monumental Trees in Catalonia), published in 1985.
In 1988, the Catalan Department of Agriculture, Stock breeding and Fishing named the Oak Tree of Vilardel Monumental Catalan Tree. Subsequently, on August 12 1989, the owner (Pere Bonada Roca) gave his permission to declare the tree monumental with the condition that they would respect the private road and the land which lead to the oak tree.
Finally, on December 28 1992, the Oak Tree of Vilardel was included on the list of monumental trees by order of the journal Diari Oficial de la Generalitat.
The Oak Tree of Perramon
This oak tree, situated within the municipality of Ribes de Freser, is a Quercus humilis.
The Oak Tree of Perramon is in front of the house with the same name in a land owned by Tomàs de Montagut Estragués, between Aigües de Ribes and Bruguera, at the beginning of the road to Bruguera.
The European Holly of Ventolà
Ramon Vinyeta wrote about this European holly in his book Els arbres monumentals de Catalunya (1985): “It [a little hamlet in Ventolà] is visited because of its landscape... and also because of its European holly, perhaps the most relevant in Catalonia. It is situated between the neighbourhood and the Church of Sant Cristòfol and it has more than a dozen thick branches with forest green leaves; it constitutes an important part of the landscape”.
Since the flowers of the European holly tree bloom in the winter and its leaves are used as Christmas decoration, it is a protected tree which had been in danger of extinction; however, nowadays it enjoys a relatively good health.
The European holly can reach a considerable height (about 20 meters) although its most common presentation is as a bush. It has a peculiar characteristic that makes it a very solid tree: its wood is very resistant and it seldom rots.
In addition, the European holy has pharmacological properties and its fruits, which ripen in the fall, are toxic.
The European Holly of Ventolà was added to the list of monumental trees of Catalonia in 2005.
The Fir Tree of Torrent de la Cometa or Big Fir Tree of Forn de la Calç
The first name is the one found in the official register Diari oficial de la Generalitat de Catalunya (DOGC) and the second one appears in the informative sign driven into the foot of the tree.
In the southern part of Planoles, crossing the river Rigard, we find the fir wood of Planoles, which is 574 hectares and which has granted a good economic situation to the municipal finances of Planoles.
