The name of the village derives from the old term ‘parietinas’, which means the ‘ruins of a building’. It was documented in the will of a nun from Sant Joan de les Abadesses in the 10th century. It has been property of the viscounts of Cerdanya, the lords of Sales, the monastery of Sant Martí de Canigó, and the counts of Barcelona. La Vall de Ribes was a strategic place, a natural way towards Cerdanya; moreover, from the times of Guifré el Pilós it was administratively, as well as politically, property of the County of Cerdanya.
